Accommodation. Check the hostels/cheap accommodation before your trip and always read the reviews! Tip: If you are looking for a more unique experience avoid the big chains like that have 'YHA', 'HI'. in their name, although these are safe bets they can be a little bland. The more funky and creative backpacker hostels are often standalone or only part of a small chain.

Be Rail Savvy. Learn how train stations work in each country along your journey, train times, right platform and the right train. Tip: If you are travelling in nations where the alphabet characters are not the same, make a note of key destinations and signs so you can spot and recognise them.

Have a plan B. Part of the adventure is the randomness that occurs along the way, however to avoid these dramas turning into a genuine crisis always have a contingency up your sleeve. Tip: Make sure you have alternate accommodation . Write down the addresses and distances of the nearest hostels so you know you have somewhere to go if your own arrangements go south.

Learn a bit of Lingo. Learn a few phrases of the language. It's always nice to at least try speaking the local language when you're traveling and even if you are not fluent, trying shows a lot of respect to your host.

Never go solo without letting someone know. Spontaneity is all integral to discovering new adventures and experiences, but before you head off anywhere on your own make sure it isn't into the unknown. Tip: Whenever you are thinking of diverting away from your plans. STOP. Tell someone either back home and someone you trust where you are, tell them where you are going first and who you are with and when you will return. If in DOUBT - DON'T.

Pay attention to what is around you. Pay attention to your surroundings! Whilst you are looking around taking it all in , someone may be looking at you and taking it all from you! Tip: If you are a woman … conceal cash by rolling it up tightly and sticking it in an empty tampon applicator (unused!!!). Not many pickpockets will try to steal a tampon from your pocket!
