Two astronomers - Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) & Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) discover that a huge comet will hit Earth within six months time, eliminating all life. Their attempts to warn the President (Meryl Streep) fall on deaf earths, as she shrugs off the idea as just another crazy conspiracy theory. Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe joins Kate and Randall, as they desperately try to tell the world alone. Meanwhile the President tries to bolster her public image (and divert attention from a recent scandal) by sending war hero Benedict Drask into orbit to deflect the comet. The plan is hijacked by tech giant boss Peter Isherwell, when he finds out that the comet contains untold profits - enough for an infinite supply of rare metals. The President and her administration get on board with the plan to mine the comet, and allow the shards to hit earth. Eventually the public looks up to the sky, but it is too late. The final scenes conclude with Randall, Kate, and their loved ones gathering together for a last supper, until their house shakes and the inevitable happens.. the world ends. Fast forward to a new planet, some 22k years later - the rich wake up from their cryogenic hibernation, after escaping in a lone rocket.
